Senior Researcher
The opportunity
This post is aimed at someone who has recently competed a PhD, in the areas of hydraulic modelling, catchment scale modelling or the modelling of aquatic pollution processes and in interested in developing expertise at the academic-industry boundary.
Description and Desired Qualifications
CH2M are delighted to be awarded EU Marie Curie Initial Training Network funding to develop and evaluate tools and guidance to enhance understanding in quantifying uncertainty in integrated catchment studies (QUICS). In collaboration with eight leading European universities and research institutions, CH2M are the senior private sector partner providing robust testing of tools and insight on technology uptake by decision makers across government, regulator and commercial sectors.

To meet the
challenges for this unique research opportunity we are seeking a recently
qualified PhD graduate who is an enthusiastic and dynamic individual and who
wants to grow their own career working across the university- private sector.
You will join an established and thriving water team in Swindon (UK) currently
working on commercial projects that make a difference to local communities and
the environment. In this role you will lead the research project, with
responsibility for agreeing the methodology and delivery approach and for
development of new market facing decision support solutions.
We are a seeking
a recently completed PhD graduate ready to take on new responsibilities for
technical elements of project delivery, fostering strong relationships with
potential end-users and for day to day collaboration with doctoral and
post-doctoral researchers at the partner universities.
The overall aim
of QUICS ITN is to carry out research and provide high level training in
collaboration with industry/private sector to deliver five objectives:
1.Develop knowledge on the levels of uncertainty found when modelling water quality processes in integrated catchment approaches which combine wastewater collection, wastewater treatment, in-river processes and diffuse pollution elements.
2.Develop new approaches on uncertainty analysis and quantification for the simulation of water quality to cover all significant temporal and spatial scales found in catchments.
3.Develop new techniques to propagate uncertainties between water quality models.
4.Disseminate this new understanding and techniques in a format (tools and guidance) that can be used by practitioners and public authorities to better understand and justify the investment decisions they need to make as they implement the Water Framework Directive.
5.Create a group of researchers capable of operating between academic research institutions and water utilities/other public bodies/commercial sector with a comprehensive understanding of uncertainty and with the capability to deploy appropriate modelling strategies to use when modelling pollution and water quality at an integrated catchment level.

The main focus
of the CH2M placed researcher will be in objective 4 of the above listing,
however you will contribute to the other objectives in collaboration with
others.
